9:00 - 9:45 How to Change Your Culture to Foster Innovation, James Higgins, PhD, Harriet W. and George D. Cornell Professor of Innovation Management, Roy E. Crummer Graduate School of Business, Rollins College.

Innovation is the only competitive advantage left for most U.S. based firms. The global marketplace demands it and research verifies that it is the competitive advantage that provides the highest returns. Professor Higgins will discuss a new set of tools to change an organization's culture to make it more innovative - cultural artifacts. At the conclusion of this interactive presentation you will be able to use cultural artifacts to foster higher levels of innovation in your organization.

NOTE: There will be an afternoon break-out session with Dr. Higgins.

9:45 - 10:30 China in 2010, James Chan, PhD, President and Founder, Asia Marketing and Management

Will China’s rise as a global manufacturing power continue? Will the looming wealth gap in China bring about a re-run of the Tiananmen Incident of 1989? Will China buy more American products? James Chan will present his thoughts on what China will be like as a place in which you do business in 2010.

10:30-11:00 Networking Break with Table Top Exhibits

11:00-11:45 Engineering Across Borders: Improving the Effectiveness of Globally Distributed Design Teams with attention to strategic, cultural, and power issues, Kenneth David, PhD, MBA, Anthropology and Transcultural Project Studies, Michigan State University

Senior executives view outsourcing and offshoring as necessary parts of business development. They cannot ignore it as a source of competitive advantage. They also cannot ignore that offshoring is controversial. Manufacturing jobs from the United States and from Western Europe (that were earlier offshored, respectively, to the Maquiladora region or to Central Europe) are now going further afield to China and to India. Due to the rise in quality and quantity of engineers from Asia, engineering jobs are also being offshored.

What are engineers and project managers to do when they are told to offshore? First, a prime strategic question is "When to go and when to stay?" Second, are there alternatives to the lowest-cost-offshore strategy? Third, engineers from North America now have to work in dispersed design teams with engineers from abroad. Miscommunication occurs frequently. Professor David will discuss effective practices for handling cultural and power issues that arise in dispersed teams; these practices reduce costly miscommunications and improve performance. Bio

NOTE: There will be an afternoon break-out session with Dr. David.
