SMMA
sponsors a Spring Management Conference and a Fall
Technical Conference open to members and prospective members.
October 15-17: Fall Technical Conference
Energy
Efficiency and Inflation -
The Motor Design Challenge
SMMA
Fall Technical Conference Chair, David E. Beth, vice president
engineering, Emerson Tool Company, recently announced the
Conference theme, “Energy Efficiency and Inflation –
The Motor Design Challenge.” Scheduled for October
15-17, 2008, SMMA members and prospective members will
meet at the Sheraton Westport Hotel in St. Louis. Presentations
will focus on knowledge and resources necessary for motor
design engineers faced with an increased demand for efficiency
and the rising cost of materials.
SMMA
has arranged special group rates of $152 at the Sheraton Westport
Hotel in St. Louis. Reservations are available by calling

EDUCATION
The SMMA Motor
& Motion College offers a variety of motor and
drive courses in design, application and motor manufacturing.
Motor
& Motion College Courses are brought in house to your
company, tailored to meet the training needs of your employees.
Save
time! Save money!
In
addition, SMMA members have access, in the members only
area, to Technical Reference
materials, including a glossary of terms, descriptions of
basic motor parameters, design considerations for PMDC motors
and electric motors troubleshooting.
Motor
terminology have you confused? Look at the SMMA
"Motor Tree."
INDUSTRY
TRENDS
SMMA members have access, in the members only area,
to a quarterly report published by the Institute
for Trend Research (ITR). This report analyzes a number
of market indicators which impact the electric motion industry.
RESEARCH
A Consortium of SMMA member companies, founded to study
losses in lamination steels, paricularly at high frequencies
and non-sinusoidal wave forms, has recently been awarded
over $750,000 from the Department of Energy to accelerate
the research. The research is being conducted at Clarkson
University, Potsdam, New York, under the guidance of Dr. Pragassen
Pillay, Clarkson's Jean Newell Distinguished Professor of
Electrical and Computer Engineering. Participating in,
and financially supporting the work to date, are SMMA member
companies Advanced DC Motors, Black & Decker, Eaton Corp,
Lamination Specialties, Magnetic Instrumentation/KJS and Magsoft
Corp.
The
most recent update
on the work of the Consortium was given at the SMMA Fall
Technical Conference, in October, 2006 in St. Louis.
THE
EMERF LAMINATION STEELS THIRD EDITION CD-ROM IS NOW AVAILABLE
-
Every
20-30 years an attempt is made to collate and communicate
information on the state of magnetic materials development.
Steve Sprague and EMERF have done an exemplary job at updating
and presenting the total spectrum of soft magnetic steels
including numerous essential charts and tables. A more thorough
reference work is not to be found.
