Electronic Motor Education and Research Foundation

EMERF, The Electric Motor Education and Research Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization was founded by SMMA in 1995. It's mission is:

To advance and promote the electric motor industry through education*, pre-competitive research and facilitation of technology transfer within the industry and in cooperation with academic, private research and governmental organizations.

*Electric motor education is currently provided by SMMA's Motor & Motion College

EMERF current projects include:

1. Lamination Steels Third Edition - a CD-ROM: a compendium of lamination steel alloys commonly used in electric motors was published March 1, 2007. It includes:

- magnetic information from 13 international producers

- a PDF document with over 1,700 pages of up-to-date material performance charts, product information and data values for both the Core Loss and Magnetization properties for a wide variety of lamination alloys

- magnetization values in Oersteds and amperes/meter and core loss values in both watts/pound and watts/kilogram for all materials included in the CD-ROM, including commonly used lamination steel alloys as well as amorphous and powdered core materials

- more than 180 spreadsheets with detailed magnetic property data for all the materials covered in the PDF document, allowing for easy insertion of this information into motor simulation and magnetic analysis software

2. "Losses in Lamination Magnetic Steels" - A Consortium of SMMA member companies, founded to study losses in lamination steels, paricularly at high frequencies and non-sinusoidal wave forms, has recently been awarded over $750,000 from the Department of Energy to accelerate the research. The research is being conducted at Clarkson University, Potsdam, New York, under the guidance of Dr. Pragassen Pillay, Clarkson's Jean Newell Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Participating in, and financially supporting the work to date, are SMMA member companies Advanced DC Motors, Black & Decker, Eaton Corp, Lamination Specialties, Magnetic Instrumentation/KJS, Magsoft Corp. and Proto Laminations Inc

It is governed by a Board of Directors which includes, per its by-laws, both SMMA Board members and non-SMMA Board members. Currently:

Officers

President, John Smith, National Accounts Manager, A.O. Smith

Vice President, Kitt Butler, Director, Motors and Drives, Advanced Energy

Secretary-Treasurer, Ed Knoth, Senior Research Engineer, IAP Research, Inc.

Board of Directors

Bob Fisher, Consultant
