Question - What shape is the small motor market in?

Wellingborough, UK March 2010

Answer – “V” Shaped!

According to the first edition of the Americas tracker, the small motor market has undergone a “V” shaped contraction and recovery.

IMS Research estimated the Americas small motor market was worth $812 million at the end of 2007. The downturn in the market began in the third quarter 2008, and bottomed out during the second quarter 2009. The market stabilised and then began to recover in the final quarter 2009. Overall the market was flat in 2008 and fell in excess of 12.5% in 2009. The Americas small motor market has performed very robustly, this is due to the impact of product replacement trends on the market. The small motors considered in the tracker, have benefited from product replacement trends from AC motors in industrial applications. In addition, the medical industry has held up strongly through the downturn.  Medical applications account for 29% of the small motor market in the Americas.

What can we expect from 2010, an acceleration in the recovery or a double dip to the recession?

The next edition of the tracker, which will cover the first quarter 2010, we trust will provide firm evidence of a strong recovery of the market. If you manufacture any of the motors listed in the tracker scope and wish to participate in the market tracker please contact james.dawson@imsresearch.com
