PMD Mission Statement
“Increase the understanding, promotion and effective
utilization of magnetic materials, assemblies and systems
for the benefit of the Permanent Magnet Division members
and all users of permanent magnet products.”
About The Permanent Magnet Division (PMD)
On May 9, 2007 a preliminary organization meeting was
held in conjunction with the SMMA Spring Management
Conference in San Diego, California. This initiative
began after the recent dissolution of the Permanent
Magnet group within the International Magnetics Association
(IMA). The International Magnetics Association
(IMA) was the worldwide trade association representing
manufacturers of magnetic materials, distributors and
fabricators, suppliers to the magnet industry and others
with an interest in magnetic materials. In November
of 2001, the IMA replaced MMPA, expanding its scope
and operations in recognition of the global nature of
the magnetic industry. The IMA formerly operated
as the Magnetic Materials Producers Association (MMPA),
was originally founded in 1959

The PMD Membership Criteria
SMMA membership is required to participate in the Permanent
Magnet Division. The following businesses
and organizations are encouraged to actively participate:
Magnet Producer — Manufacturers
of one or more of the following products; bonded magnets,
ceramic magnets, metal magnets, soft ferrites and soft
metallic materials and such other magnets or magnetic
materials as may hereafter be added by the Board of
Directors; or,
Distributor/Fabricator — Distributors
of magnetic materials and/or fabricators of products
or components containing magnetic material; or,
Supplier — Suppliers of materials
and services to the permanent magnet industry

Standard Specifications
for Permanent Magnet Materials
This specification defines thermal and mechanical characteristics
and properties of commercially available permanent magnet
materials including Alnico, Ceramic, Rare Earth (Samarium
cobalt and neodymium) and Iron-Chromium-Cobalt. The
document also includes a Glossary of Terms and Magnetic
Quantities (Symbols, Units and Conversion Factors). Download

Permanent Magnet Guideline
This guideline is supplemental to the Standard Specification
for Permanent Magnet Materials. The guide is a bridge
between unit property data and a permanent magnet component
having a specific size and geometry in order to establish
a magnetic field in a given magnetic circuit environment. Download
