Welcome to SMMA

SMMA - The Motor & Motion Association is the manufacturing trade association for the electric motor and motion control industries. More than 120 member companies include manufacturers, suppliers, users, consultants and universities.

Markets served, both consumer and commercial, include appliance, transportation, medical equipment, office automation and computers, aerospace and industrial automation.

SMMA Vision
SMMA
is the voice for the motor and motion industry, providing a forum for education, communication, research and networking.

Networking
Two annual SMMA meetings - the Spring Management Conference and the Fall Technical Conference - provide members and prospective members the opportunity to interact with industry colleagues. Attendees learn about industry trends and technologies, identify new supplier partners and network with other motors and drives professionals.

Industry Voice
SMMA is a member of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Council of Manufacturing Associations. Through this affiliation, SMMA strengthens the industry's voice and monitors legislative issues which may impact the membership.

Education
The SMMA Motor & Motion College is unique to the industry, providing courses that range from basic motor theory to design and application of specific motor types. It is an excellent educational resource to learn the fundamentals or get a valuable refresher.

SMMA Motor & Motion College courses are available for in-house presentation, tailored to meet a company’s specific training needs. Courses are also presented prior to each SMMA Conference and at industry events.

PMD - Permanent Magnet Division
Permanent Magnet Division
The PMD mission is to increase the understanding, promotion and effective utilization of magnetic materials, assemblies and systems for the benefit of the Permanent Magnet Division members and all users of permanent magnet products. Three officers, a chairman, vice chairman and secretary-treasurer govern the PMD, communicating with the membership between meetings as required. There is a PMD representative on the SMMA Board of Directors.

PMD meetings are scheduled prior to the start of every SMMA Conference. As these meetings are open to all, you are invited to attend, and also visit the PMD section on this website

Electric Motor Education & Research Foundation
The Electric Motor, Education & Research Foundation, a 501(c)(3), was founded by SMMA in 1995. Its mission, to advance and promote the electric motor industry through education, pre-competitive electric motor research and facilitation of technology transfer within the industry and in cooperation with academic, private research and governmental organizations, is fulfilled with a variety of projects.

Pre-Competitive Electric Motor Research Consortium
The EMERF Pre-Competitive Electric Motor Research Consortium (PCEMRC) includes 26 SMMA member companies interested in motor and motion industry research. Potential projects currently being discussed include both incremental research and disruptive technology. Governance is provided by five members of the EMERF Board of Directors. A PCEMRC breakout session is scheduled during every SMMA Conference.

Lamination Steels Third Edition CD-ROM
An invaluable resource for designers and engineers of electric machines of all types, the EMERF Laminations Steels Third Edition CD-ROM is a single source of magnetic property data on the electromagnetic materials used in the laminated cores of electric motors.

Consortium on Losses in Lamination Steels
The objective of this collaborative work including ten SMMA member companies and Clarkson University facilities and resources was to understand the scientific principles governing core losses in laminations, particularly as it relates to high frequency and non-sinusoidal excitation.
