Welcome to SMMA

SMMA - The Motor & Motion Association is the manufacturing trade association for the electric motor and motion control industries. More than 120 member companies include manufacturers, suppliers, users, consultants and universities.

Markets served, both consumer and commercial, include appliance, transportation, medical equipment, office automation and computers, aerospace and industrial automation.

SMMA Vision
SMMA is the voice for the motor and motion industry, providing a forum for education, communication, research and networking.

Networking
Two annual SMMA meetings – the Spring Management Conference and the Fall Technical Conference – provide members and prospective members the opportunity to interact with industry colleagues. Attendees learn about industry trends and technologies, identify new supplier partners and network with other motor and drives professionals.

Industry Voice
SMMA is a member of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Council of Manufacturing Associations. Through this affiliation, SMMA strengthens the industry’s voice and monitors legislative issues which may impact the membership.

Education
The SMMA Motor & Motion College is unique to the industry, providing courses that range from basic motor theory to design and application of specific motor types. It is an excellent educational resource to learn the fundamentals or get a valuable refresher.

SMMA Motor & Motion College courses are available for in-house presentation, tailored to meet a company’s specific training needs. Courses are also presented prior to each SMMA Conference and at industry events.

Research
The Electric Motor, Education and Research Foundation (EMERF) promotes the electric motor industry through education, pre-competitive research and facilitation of technology transfer within the industry and in cooperation with academic, private research and governmental organizations.

The SMMA/EMERF/Clarkson University Consortium (of SMMA member companies) on Losses in Lamination Steels has completed over three years of research on material properties at high frequencies and at non-sinusoidal excitations, funded in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
